The who and why of Vortimac Software.

Vortimac Software is really just one person, me, Rob Minerick. Most of my time throughout the year is spent working on software products, hoping to hit on the “next big thing” that will… well, enable me to keep doing what I’m doing. I also do some consulting work, which helps pay bills around the house - but for the most part, writing software is what I do. Fortunately for me, it’s also my hobby (and my wife might say, an obsession), so most of the time it hardly feels like work.

Vortimac was founded way back in 2000, with the release of a small control strip module (you do remember the control strip, don’t you?) for OS 9 called Ticker Strip. Ticker Strip was mildly successful, but not enough that we could get by on my wife’s paltry grad school income. After a 3 year hiatus (in which time I finished my M.S.), Vortimac returned with the release of Dossier, which has fortunately generated many more sales than Ticker Strip. I’d like to think that Vortimac will be around for quite some time.

As for the name, Vortimac, that was my wife’s idea. Try thinking of a name… just try… it’s not that easy. I’m pretty sure any dictionary word of any substance has been taken (I have a pretty good sample of this), and so I was forced to make something up. Vorticity is rotational velocity. This isn’t a word I would think of, but my wife being an engineer, it seemed like a natural choice (to her). My contribution was the “mac” part, for obvious reasons.
